It's a Manic Monday

...and one after a long weekend. Before tempers hang glide and sparks fly because of your holiday hangover, here is a lowdown on managing a meltdown at work.

Much as we look forward to a long weekend, no one looks forward to the Monday after it. For we all know it won't be an Olympian task to find a fussy colleague or a crabby boss. If you go in with a super chilled mindset thinking 'I am ready for the next weekend already', it will worsen matters more and you shall be embarrassingly woken up from holiday mood.

At some point, all of us have had a bad day at work. Even if you love your job, chances are you have experienced a day where something or someone is wearing you down. You may also have been overwhelmed, stunned or simply preoccupied by things. Add to that the Monday factor, which means your mind might just wander off back home.

Predict the meltdown:

Sometimes, those routinely stressful moments build up until a meltdown happens - that too a massive, loud one. And it can happen to even the most professional employee.

The key is to put yourself in others' shoes and then do the thinking. Boss pressuring you for a meeting while you have made a commitment to meet an important personal contact? A verbal conflict with the boss can easily follow, and you can quickly reach boiling point and scream "I quit!" If you do so, you will most probably return to work tomorrow, but the environment will remained unfavorable enough for you to resign a few months later.

Instead simply presume that, the boss is in one of the typically nasty moods and calmly explain how meeting your contact is indispensable and will benefit the company later. If this is timed tactfully, you might just get the concession.

Does this sound familiar? If you, a coworker or a manager are nearing a breakdown, it may be a sign that things at work are out of balance. You and your office mates should consider these preventative measures:

Keep the talk simple:

While an ideal boss would encourage communication on manic Mondays, there are no ideal bosses, right? Its thus up to you to discuss workplace stress and blowing off a little steam. However, nobody wants to create a negative vibe with ranting about work, so keep the talk simple, to the point, and non-controversial for the moment. Talking about frustrations or challenges is healthy. If those frustrations are impacting your ability to get your job done, hold on and think about them only while at peace.

Assess your workload:

Meltdowns are more likely to happen if a large portion of the workload is resting on one set of shoulders. If the balance or work in your department is off-balance, signal this subtly to your manager. Even if you are incredibly busy, take the time to cross-train other employees whenever you can. The investment of time pays off handsomely when those co-workers are able to take on a bigger workload.

Take a break:

With a rising need for skilled people and a constant shortage of staff, many workers feel pushed to the brink simply because of being overwhelmed. It may be tempting to forego taking a break or a lunch when you have a backlog of work. Make sure you get away from your desk at least a few times a day. If you can, go outside and walk around the block or around the building. If the Mumbai rains do not co-operate, find a quiet place indoors, like an unoccupied conference room If all else fails, close your eyes and take 10 long, deep breaths at your desk, before having chai.

Help others to help yourself:

Monday mania is a minor thing, your co-worker or boss may have personal issues that are the real cause of havoc at work. Though you clearly want to respect everyone's privacy, ask those visibly troubled if everything is fine. If he or she discloses a problem, simply listen rather than being over smart and suggesting solutions. If they listen, you may also share your experience or opinion on issues like child care, elder care and alcohol dependency.

It is crucial for you to address any issue that triggers a meltdown before it happens. Your colleagues may be compassionate when you experience stress, especially if you are apologetic about it afterward, but there is a risk of crossing the line. A meltdown could result in probation and ultimately affect your career.
