Voguish contact lens to monitor diseases

Guys, US researchers have developed a contact lens with a built-in pressure sensor that could help monitor conditions such as glaucoma. Glaucoma is an eye disease that damages the optic nerve and impairs vision, sometimes progressing to blindness.

The device is based on a new technique, which can embed conducting circuits in the organic polymer traditionally used to make contact lenses. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is an elastic, transparent and gas-permeable organic polymer that can be cast-moulded into a range of simple shapes.

It is used in everything from contact lenses to breast implants, but the process of cast-moulding severely limits the kinds of structures that can be mad with the material. The researchers added a chemical to a liquid PDMS solution that causes the mixture to set, or polymerize, when zapped with UV light. Then, they exposed the mixture to UV light through a mask containing a circuit pattern.

Only the areas hit by the light polymerize and any remaining liquid can be washed away, leaving an imprint of the circuit. The technique can be used to create features just 10 micrometers in size.

The scientists also developed a technique to give the polymer another property - electrical conductivity - by adding a solution of silver to the mix. The silver then becomes a path along which electrons can pass. Since the resisting of the path changes as the material is stretched, the modified PDMS is suitable for a range of micro-sized electromechanical systems.

One of the first devices that the researchers have produced is a tiny pressure sensor, which they bent into the shape of a contact lens. A device can measure the stress on the cornea surface and the fluid pressure within the eye to monitor glaucoma and ocular hypertension. In glaucoma patients, that pressure rises and changes the eye's shape, which would in configuration will alter the resistance and give a different electrical reading.

The prototype is has an opaque sensor that would impair vision and so would be worn only briefly, but researchers are designing transparent equivalents that could be worn for long periods to give a continuous pressure read-out. The device also contains a small RFID tag to read the data wirelessly.

It is Google's Second Life

The internet search leader launches a free service that transforms online hangouts zipper. It rivals the well-established site "Second Life"

Guys here is the news from San Francisco that in the latest expansion beyond its main mission of organizing the world's information, Internet search leader Google Inc. hopes to orchestrate more virtual socializing on the Web.

Google debuted a free service in which three-dimensional software enables people to congregate in fantasy rooms and other computer-manufactured versions of real life.

The service, called "Lively" represents Google's answer to an already well-established site, "Second Life", where people deploy animated alter egos known as avatars to navigate virtual reality.

Google thinks "Lively" will encourage even more people to dive into alternate realities because it isn't tethered to one Web site like "Second Life", and it doesn't cost anything to use. After installing a small packet of software from lively.com, a user can enter Lively from other Websites, like social networking sites and blogs.

Google already has created a Lively application that works on "Facebook.com", one of the Web's hottest hangouts, and is working on a version suitable for an even larger online social network. News Corp's "Myspace.com".

Naine Wang, a Google engineering manager who oversaw "Lively's" creation over the past year said, "we know people already spend a lot of time online socializing, so we just want to try to make it more enjoyable".

Lively's users will be able to sculpt an avatar that can be male, female or even a different species. An avatar can assume a new identity, change clothes or convey emotions with a few clicks of the mouse. The service also enables users to create different digital environments to roam, from a child's room to an exotic island.

Check your computers for DNS vulnerability

Industry leaders are trying to fix a basic internet flaw that enables hackers to attract online users to imitation web pages.

Computer industry heavyweights are hustling to fix a flaw in the foundation of the Internet that would let hackers control traffic on the World Wide Web. Major software and hardware makers worked in secret for months to create a software "patch", released yesterday, to repair the problem, which is in the way computers are routed to web page addresses.

Securosis analyst Rich Mogul said in a media conference call, "It's a very fundamental issue with how the entire addressing scheme of the Internet works, You would have the Internet, but it wouldn't be the Internet you expect. (Hackers) would control everything".

The flaw would be a boon for "phishing" cons that involve leading people to imitation web pages of businesses such as bank or credit card companies to trick them into disclosing account numbers, passwords and other information.

Attackers could use the vulnerability to route Internet users wherever they wanted no matter what website address is typed into a web browser. Security researcher Dan Kaminsky of of IOActive stumbled upon the Domain Name System (DNS) vulnerability about six months ago and reached out to industry giants including Microsoft, Sun and Cisco to collaborate on a solution.
DNS is used by every computer that links to the Internet and works similar to telephone system routing calls to proper numbers, in this case the online numerical addresses of websites. Kaminsky said that, " people should be concerned but they should not be panicking". Kaminsky built a web page, www.doxpara.com, where people can find out whether their computer have the DNS vulnerability.
