The network is called Friendlee and it analyses calls and messages to build up a picture of a person's closest correspondents. Regular contacts are displayed more prominently so that users do not have to wade through a phonebook to find them.

The system also analyses which firms a person uses to generate recommendations to other people in their network. "It builds a network of people that you communicate with," explained Bernardo Huberman, director of the social computing lab at the firm's Palo Alto research centre. "If you stop communicating with those people or you begin to communicate (with them) less, they keep dropping down to the bottom of your list."

The application is currently undergoing laboratory testing before it is shown off at the Mobile HCI conference in Bonn, Germany, in September. It has been developed, in part, as a response to research done by HP into how people use social networks. Last year, for example, Professor Huberman's group analysed the relationships on Twitter. "We were able to tease out information from the service," explained Professor Huberman.

"Social networks that truly matter - those ones where you are actually communicated in a human sense - happen to be much smaller than the circle of followers," said Professor Huberman. It constructs what the researchers call an "intimate social network".

Nokia's device uses a wide-band antenna and two very simple circuits. The antenna and the receiver circuit are designed to pick up a wide range of frequencies - from 500 megahertz to 10 gigahertz - and convert the electromagnetic waves into an electrical current, while the second circuit is designed to feed this current to the battery to recharge it.

So far they have been able to harvest up to 5 milliwatts. Their short-term goal is to get in excess of 20 milliwatts, enough power to keep a phone in standby mode indefinitely without having to recharge it.

But this would not be enough to actually use the phone to make or receive a call, he says. So ultimately the hope is to be able to get as much as 50 milliwatts which would be sufficient to slowly recharge the battery.

Everyone had a negative comment to make and felt that the project should be scrapped since the Roeblings were the only ones who knew how the bridge could be built. In spite of his handicap Washington was never discouraged and still had a burning desire to complete the bridge and his mind was still as sharp as ever.

He tried to inspire and pass on his enthusiasm to some of his friends, but they were too daunted by the task. As he lay on his bed in his hospital room, with the sunlight streaming through the windows, a gentle breeze blew the flimsy white curtains apart and he was able to see the sky and the tops of the trees outside for just a moment.

It seemed that there was a message for him not to give up. Suddenly an idea hit him. All he could do was move one finger and he decided to make the best use of it. By moving this, he slowly developed a code of communication with his wife.

He touched his wife's arm with that finger, indicating to her that he wanted her to call the engineers again. Then he used the same method of tapping her arm to tell the engineers what to do. It seemed foolish but the project was under way again.

For 13 years Washington tapped out his instructions with his finger on his wife's arm, until the bridge was finally completed. Today the spectacular Brooklyn Bridge stands in all its glory as a tribute to the triumph of one man's indomitable spirit and his determination not to be defeated by circumstances. It is also a tribute to the engineers and their team work, and to their faith in a man who was considered mad by half the world. It stands too as a tangible monument to the love and devotion of his wife who for 13 long years patiently decoded the messages of her husband and told the engineers what to do.

Perhaps this is one of the best examples of a never-say-die attitude that overcomes a terrible physical handicap and achieves an impossible goal.

Often when we face obstacles in our day-to-day life, our hurdles seem very small in comparison to what many others have to face. The Brooklyn Bridge shows us that dreams that seem impossible can be realized with determination and persistence, no matter what the odds are.

Even the most distant dream can be realized with determination and persistence.

I know many of us could not know the various types of dance what they have heard here before. Let us move with me to see the details of some different kind of dances on the floor.

WALTZ:

FOCUS: Calves

Glamorous gowns, elegant tail-coats, classical music and sexy calves - that's waltz for you. This dance form falls under the ballroom style of dancing with the focus on the calf muscle.

Waltz revolves around a three-step movement. The dancing couple needs to be on their toes and in the bargain, their calves get toned. The moves are very controlled and a lot of pressure is applied on the calves while moving around or lifting the partner. After a period of performing waltz, one is sure to get rid of the extra bulk on the calves.

BHARATNATYAM:

FOCUS: Thighs and arms

Classical Indian dance forms do not lag behind in fitness. The moves in Bharatnatyam exert a lot of pressure on the legs, especially the thigh and foot. Most steps need you to stamp the feet, therefore strengthening the foot and making it more flexible to move around quickly and less prone to foot injuries. You also need to maintain your arms at shoulder level, thus toning them, and maintain your balance and posture.

The two important postures in this dance form are urnntandi (semisitting position) and muru mandi (total sitting position) which strengthen the thighs. Most mandi jumps from a semi-sitting to completely sitting position are done on the toes, teaching your body to balance itself.
